I used to perform in Montreal, Canada quite often. I think it’s the only city in North America that hosts electronic events that give you that party feel you get in Europe. I’ve performed at some of the best spots in Montreal including the Canadian CBGB’s aka Foufounes Électriques and the now huge EBM event the Kinetik Festival. Since it has been a few years I wanted to make the most of the weekend so I decided to do a DJ Set on Thursday, a live show Friday and go to an official afterparty on Saturday. The DJ set was a last minute surprise announcement at a club called Bar Passeport. I was glad to see people there and after I fit my S4 and laptop in a super tiny booth I played a techno EBM set full of Gesaffelstein, TTC remixes and 80s EBM. I will post that set later tonight or tomorrow. I met some proper TTC fans, Maurice Roy the official Horrorist graphic designer and some friends from NYC. The live show the next night was at Le Belmont. During soundcheck I noticed it was a pretty nice/classy venue and it could also hold more than just a few people. When I returned around midnight I was pleased to see the place quite full of freaks. The stage was large and had a full size video wall behind me. I love when promoters get things right. With space to move and scream I had a blast performing. Even with all the stage space I jumped into the crowd a few times. When I wear my helmet people think it’s fun to hit me in the head and Montreal was no different. One guy almost knocked me out. In Montreal nightclubs and bars close early. This weekend that was a good thing because I “had” to attend the official/planned afterparty. After dropping my equipment off and changing out of some very sweaty clothes I found myself in a place I called the “Hippie House”. There was an episode of Mad Men where Don Draper goes to LA and finds himself way out of his element. The Hippie House was that kind of place for me because well it was run by authentic hippies. I met some very deranged non-hippie like people in there too. So just like a PG movie I now close the door on this story and let your imagination do the rest. I had a great time and somehow I feel it won’t be so long before I return to Montreal again. To see the full set of photos: click here
