It’s Valentine’s Day so how appropriate is it to explain the greatest love song I ever wrote? I wrote this song for the obsessed, wanting, yearning. I wrote it for those who found fire in another persons eyes. I wrote it for those trapped in one place dying to be in another. I wrote it for us.

It’s a Friday in February, early in the morning dark and dreary. It seems appropriate to tell you another behind the music look from Joyless Pleasure. We are on song number four. This song has the same title as the album so consciously I’ve highlighted it in yellow for you. If you look closely at the album you will notice this song is not the original mix. I’ve had help on this one so now I’ve underlined the song too.
This song is about being in love with sadness. The song is about feeding addiction, depression and danger. It’s about the search for pain and keeping your head up after you found it. I once lived in Chelsea for about a decade. The years I was there a notorious homosexual community was locked in crystal meth addiction. I met some very troubled soles screaming, crashing and melting into each other. There was incredible pleasure. All of it incredibly joyless.
Although I didn’t think of it at the time when I hear the song now and hear the chorus it reminds me of the lyric “Keep your head up (moving on)” in the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams. Not the vocal style or melody but the message. I loved the song Sweet Dreams when I was a teenager. It makes me a bit sad today that I now now what she really means in the song. We have all had times where the only way forward was to just walk, keeping walking and forget. Funny how we preemptively connect with things.
The vocals took about a full month to get right. I would do a verse here and there because sometimes inspiration trickles instead of flows. When I have the lyrics perfect I have to re-sing the entire song because each previously recorded verse was a different take and don’t sound right (different mics, times of day). That usually causes another issue: when I have everything done and want to record the final full vocal all at once I’ve heard the song so many times that instead of singing it with inspiration I sort of parody myself. This is why many times I have to shelve the song for a long enough time so I forget about it, come back to it hit record and hope the first new take after 4-5 weeks is an insprired one. So yes that was the original mix… its just drums, one synth and vocals. I sent it to my most trusted musical friend Gabri Negro (Richter) to hear. He always asks to remix/reedit my work and in this case I was so exhausted by the track I said please do. I didn’t expect what he returned with. Usually I have enough confidence and bravado to think I can always make a better song than anyone else. In this case the original or anything I was going to do wouldn’t be better so I asked him if I could use his version on the album. I should note here he never asks for any money or anything in return. My last full length album was released in May (The Horrorist, Joyless Pleasure). Before this year is up I will release a remixed version. I’ve been really pleased with all the remixes people have been sending me for Joyless Pleasure. I’m still waiting for a few but Maurice is already well into the album artwork. I’m keeping most of the mixes unheard for now but one of the mixes is out of the bag and happily already charting. Everyone knows Magda. She’s one of the big one so I’m pleased to post she’s got Miro’s remix of Hostage at number 3 on her most recent chart.

About a month ago I wrote a post titled Post All Your Music in Full on YouTube (link). Well, I practice what I preach and have uploaded my new album Joyless Pleasure in it’s entirety. I also took the oppurtunity to refresh the look of the page. I added a 1600 pixel wide “Horrorist” logo wallpaper that shades to beige when you scroll down a bit. I also spent time tweaking the colors of the Channel to match the album’s look. I have no doubt uploading the songs in full is a good decision and I already see the view counts rising quickly. I also made a the embedable Joyless Pleasure playlist you see above. Big thanks to my graphic designer Maurice Roy for creating stills for each of the songs.

I went to College at SUNY Purchase. Today the school has “normaled” out a bit but when I went there it was mostly art students. One of the required courses was called Social Sciences in the Arts. The professor spent a good amount of time explaining there were different types of artists. The curriculum suggested that obviously an artist creates and is heavily inspired by his surrounding. It also suggested that every artist is heavily influenced by his audience. I found that to be the interesting part. I do think of who will be listening when I make music. The professor explained that even artists who are complete hermits, who never show their work in their lifetime create it hoping or knowing someday someone will discover it. Do you agree? As I slept last night my new album Joyless Pleasure was moved from the iTunes staging area where new MP3s get prepared for their lives on people harddrives and marked available. Each song took more inspiration and effort than I care to share. You my dear listener are supposed to think it was effortless and that I possess some magic music making power. Truthfully I picked the times when I was feeling the most crazy, upset or happy and forced myself into the corner studio.
I love to talk about songwriting and music tech so it was difficult not to post each one of these songs here as I finished them and tell you the story behind the lyrics and what production techniques I used. In the following couple of weeks if you don’t mind I will go into detail on some of the songs. Of course this is part promotion but it’s also to keep the “I released an new album” feeling going a little longer. So as younger folk say plz leave comments and plz retweet! Buy it or steal it but whatever you do please help me spread it around.

The music and artwork is now finished for my next album Joyless Pleasure. I would like to send out pre-release copies to get reviews in magazines and important websites. I actually think normal people/fan reviews carry more weight but this is the first step. I have two questions to Wire to the Ear readers. 1. What’s the best way today to go about this? 2. Do you have any specific recommendations of places I should try and get the album reviewed? If you have any specific contacts at a media outlet that would be a bonus as sending music off into the abyss makes me cranky.
Over the past three months I’ve been experiencing Chinese Democracy syndrome. Chinese Democracy was the Guns and Roses album that took them a decade to release. They wrote, erased, rewrote, sweated, talked and stressed instead of just letting it out. The truth is I have recorded almost 30 songs for my next album called Joyless Pleasure. I’ve worked harder and I’ve been more inspired while making these songs than ever in my life. Certainly it will be my best effort and about half I consider gems. Yet I still sit wanting to make one more song. One more that will be the one that will take it all over the top. I don’t have any advice in this post. I’m only sharing this strange experience. I am going to let go. I have my last song in Ableton. Maybe I just don’t want to go take the album photos!
