iPhone 4S / Canon 5d MKII Side by Side Comparison on Vimeo.

In my quest to finally release some proper music videos I’ve been shooting a lot of small test shots. Being addicted to pro-audio gear bleeds over to video things so of course I’ve been eyeing the wonderful mighty Canon 5d MKII. I won’t justify such an expensive purchase until I least do 3 full videos with my iPhone 4S. I picked up a Glif iPhone tripod mount (image above) and Final Cut X which I think is amazing. Some lighting is on the way and storyboarding has commenced. This morning I found a video comparing the 5d to the 4s and found it interesting. I like the 5d footage better and with different lenses the 5d would kill the iPhone. Yet with proper lighting and skill the 4s will do just fine I think for now!

“Here’s a “fair” test between the iPhone 4S and the Canon 5D MK II. I made a little rig that allowed me to shoot both cameras at the same time side by side. All scenes are perfectly synced together so you can pause and scrutinize the frames! See photo of the makeshift rig in the photo area.Exposure, shutter speed, frame rate and picture style were matched as close as possible between the two cameras. This test shows that the tiny F2.4 lens and sensor on the iPhone are pretty nice. It even got a little depth of field! I did not overlay the exact ISO and Stops 5D settings per shot. It was too much to keep track for this simple test. To be fair I matched 5D exposure to the iPhone so no “Cinestyle” / 24p here.” – Robino Films

This week we see two new apps for iOS that let you “remix your life”!

MadPad from Smule is like Cambox on steroids. It is very similar except it’s iPad native and you can browse other peoples sets. I absolutely love the browsing feature. I can already see people creating some nice modular or synth sets. This is a wicked app that anyone creative will love.

With VidRhythm you record some video clips and auto creates a music video for you. Although it’s more a fun toy than something you are going to create a real music video the concept is great. It’s not too unlike the web service Animoto. EDIT: After playing with the app a little maybe you CAN make something special…

“Remix your life with MadPad! Turn everyday sights and sounds like your car, an empty soda can, or your friends into the ultimate percussive instrument. Oh the possibilities! Woosh, boom, clap…anything can be music. Just aim the camera and shoot the sounds all around you: your local café, car, kitchen, kids, cat, friends… MadPad magic will take care of the rest. Or have fun playing with the hundreds of free premade sets.” – smule.com/madpad

“Remix your world! Introducing VidRhythm, the fun and easy way to make video music from Harmonix, the makers of Rock Band™ and Dance Central™. Video-sample yourself, your friends, your pets, or anything else, and use VidRhythm to instantly mash it up into a crazy video remix!” – vidrhythm.com

I have been secretly putting together a music video set up. Tungsten softboxes, key & fill lights, iPhone tripod mount, Final Cut X and weird outfits are being collected. Naturally as with my music I need whatever video I create to look like it was from a few decades back. Therefore I have been searching for video synthesizers. I thought I’d share this Atari Video Music unit with you today. You can find these on eBay still. Interesting no?

“It was 1975 and Bob Brown (originator of home Pong) was looking for another consumer (home) product to design. Mega stereo systems (multi-component setups that were usually designed with a mixture of futuristic metal and rec room woodgrain) were all the rage. Bob decided to make another component that would take advantage of Atari’s video display technology and act as a bridge between the television set and the stereo system. The result was the Atari Video Music, which Atari released on it’s own in 1976.” – atarihq.com

About a month ago I wrote a post titled Post All Your Music in Full on YouTube (link). Well, I practice what I preach and have uploaded my new album Joyless Pleasure in it’s entirety. I also took the oppurtunity to refresh the look of the page. I added a 1600 pixel wide “Horrorist” logo wallpaper that shades to beige when you scroll down a bit. I also spent time tweaking the colors of the Channel to match the album’s look. I have no doubt uploading the songs in full is a good decision and I already see the view counts rising quickly. I also made a the embedable Joyless Pleasure playlist you see above. Big thanks to my graphic designer Maurice Roy for creating stills for each of the songs.

“When it comes to theme and module editing, users with no CSS or design experience will find themselves completely at ease with beautifying their channel design. The themes and colors are pretty self-explanatory, so you can pick a preset theme, start toying with colors, and get an as-it-happens preview while you tweak. You can still upload a custom background image and adjust the coloring for every element of your channel. Once you’re done, just click save to publish the new design publicly.” – mashable.com
