Another great contributor to the awesome music cannon we humans have has died. The Bee Gees were great. I adore the two songs above.
“Robin Gibb, one of three brothers who made up the disco group the Bee Gees behind “Saturday Night Fever” and other now-iconic sounds from the 1970s, died on Sunday, according to a statement on his website.” – CNN

Remember me when I have gone away –
far into the eternal land
There where you can no longer feel my warmth –
nor hold me by my hand
Forget me not is what I ask –
when you stand where I so often stood
Remember me with all you heart –
if you could
Yet –
Should you forget me for a while
Do not grieve
Because it’s better you forget and smile-
then that you remember and be sad
Yeah … huge loss.
They all grew up in Brisbane, Australia (my home town) … and they have an incredible catalog of hits way before Saturday Night Fever stretching back to the sixties with some tunes that gave the Beatles a run for their money. “Spicks and Specks”, “I Started A Joke”, “New York Mining Disaster”, “Massachusetts”, “Run To Me” … they go on and on. Get their two Greatest Hits volumes… all prior to SNF.
Plus they wrote a ton of stuff for others … not to mention Grease, along the way.
Might not be to everyone’s taste, but the brute effect on our culture is tangible…

Oh, as an aside I heard an interview with one of the BG’s where they spoke about being on a tour bus ad sitting at the back with a cassette recorder taping song ideas. The bus went over an old bridge with jangly old nails and chains which made quite a racket. This was recorded.
Later when listening back to the tape one of them heard this portion of the tape … thought the noise of the bridge was interesting … looped it … tape loop then… and bam.. Jive Talkin’ rhythm came out. At that point they didn’t even have a work for Disco .. but there it was.
Loops are easy today … so get cracking and find the next big movement in music!
Thats a great story…!
