I had a similar experience, although I was snorkeling, and we weren't in the Keys but quite a way east from Miami. Same deal-deep water, a ridge that was an underwater cliff, and the abyss-but with an added twist: there was a barracuda riding the current, just hovering there, watching me—it continually adjusted its position so that it was always facing me. I remember it was such a contrast, this shiny, silver beast of a fish, teeth all poking out every which way, gleaming there against the background of dark, midnight blue water. Freaky shit!
