Sunday Sounds: Hercules & Love Affair

Hercules and Love Affair - Blind

I really like melancholic sad songs. I guess this is part of the reason I’m stuck in the 80’s musically. Every morning I do about 40 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill. Lately, I’ve been listening to music with my iPhone and the Pandora, Slacker Radio, AOL Radio and apps. The best part of this method is the constant flow of new music. Honestly, most of what I hear disappointments me but this week a song really hit me in the heart strings. I heard something that was like a modern Erasure or Boy George but something told me it wasn’t those artists. I liked the song so much I was going to jump off the machine and grab a pen & paper but then I remember if I click the Sleep and Home buttons on the iPhone simultaneously it saves a screenshot.

As a child I knew
that the stars could only get brighter
then we could get closer
leaving this darkness

Now that I’m older
the stars shed light upon my face
but when I found myself alone
I feel like I, I am blind

  1. That’s wonderful track. For me, it’s really the singer, Antony Hegarty, from Antony & the Johnsons, that makes the difference. I’ve listened so much to the album “I am Bird Now” from them, that it’s ridiculous.

  2. The singer is Antony from Antony and the Johnsons. Check out his album ”I Am a Bird Now”, it’s not at all uptempo disco stuff like this song but equally great.

  3. Somehow Hercules & the love affair feels like a dj doing squared uninspired remixes of anthony and the johnsons. His albums are way more sad and gripping. Probably not a threadmill companions but timeless nonetheless

  4. Thanks for the heads up on Antony Hegarty/Antony & the Johnsons… what a voice.

  5. I love Raise Me Up off that same record best. Speaking of Blind that Frankie Knuckles Dub is pure bliss. Gotta love those strings.

  6. Oh yeah great stuff. But for me it’s gotta be the Serge Santiago Version. So dark. So mean.
