I was also one of the first FW410 owners, I pre-ordered one two months before they were shipping.

The FW410 got a bad rep, but it was not due to the HW, mostly the drivers where the quality goes up and down with each release. Just now the drivers for OSX 10.5.x are very stable with the exception of sleep mode causing the device to stop sending out audio from time to time -- that's been the biggest problem I've had with FW410.

Another thing to remember with FW410 and similar firewire devices -- you need to make them self-powered for laptop performance use, if the laptop does not provide enough power to the device, all kinds of strange things will happen.

Also, in the studio I actually don't self-power FW410, instead have it connected direct to the MacPro system. Why? Because when I reboot the system, FW410 is also rebooted, eliminating issues with a device and the system not being in sync due to all kinds of special cases.
